# Beef liver as a multivitamin: what it covers, what it does not, and who it suits

If your morning routine includes a multivitamin and you are wondering whether beef liver capsules could replace it, the answer is nuanced. Beef liver delivers a broad group of nutrients, including haem iron, B12, folate, vitamin A, copper, selenium and zinc, in their naturally occurring whole food forms. Beef liver is among the richest dietary sources of B12: an 85 g serve provides roughly 70 micrograms, against an adult recommended intake of 2.4 micrograms a day (<a href="https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/VitaminB12-HealthProfessional/" target="\_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">NIH Office of Dietary Supplements</a>). A synthetic multivitamin covers a broader but shallower spread, often with forms your body absorbs less efficiently. Neither is complete on its own. The question is which gaps matter more for your situation.

## The science of multivitamin replacement

### Short answer

Beef liver covers the nutrients most commonly lacking in modern diets, particularly B12, folate, haem iron and vitamin A, in highly bioavailable whole food forms. A synthetic multivitamin covers more nutrients on the label but often at lower absorption rates and without the cofactors that support uptake. Liver does not provide meaningful vitamin C, vitamin E, calcium or magnesium, so it does not replace everything a broad-spectrum multivitamin labels. For most women eating a reasonable diet, liver fills the higher-impact gaps. For someone on a restricted diet, a combined approach may make more sense.

### What beef liver delivers that most multivitamins do not

The core advantage is form and matrix. Liver provides B12 as methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin, the forms your body uses directly, rather than cyanocobalamin which requires conversion ([Temova Rakusa et al., 2023](https://doi.org/10.3390/molecules28010240)). Its iron is haem iron, which is absorbed more efficiently and is far less affected by the rest of the meal than the ferrous fumarate or ferrous sulphate in most tablets ([Hurrell and Egli, 2010](https://doi.org/10.3945/ajcn.2010.28674F)). Folate arrives as naturally occurring food folate, not synthetic folic acid, which matters for a significant proportion of the population who carry MTHFR gene variants that slow folic acid conversion.

The nutrients are also co-occurring in their natural ratios. B12, folate and iron work in the same methylation and red blood cell pathways. Getting them together from one source mirrors how your body evolved to use them, rather than combining isolated synthetics at arbitrary doses.

Vitamin A is another case of form. Liver provides preformed retinol, which the body uses directly, where many multivitamins supply beta-carotene, which has to be converted first.

### How beef liver compares to a synthetic multivitamin

A standard multivitamin wins on breadth. It typically includes vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, calcium, magnesium and a spread of other minerals that beef liver provides in negligible amounts or not at all. If your diet is very restricted or you have specific deficiencies across multiple nutrients, a multivitamin covers more bases at once, even if the individual absorption rates are lower.

Beef liver wins on depth for the nutrients it does contain. The bioavailability of its iron, B12, folate and vitamin A is substantially higher than the synthetic equivalents. For a woman eating a balanced diet who is primarily concerned about energy, iron status and B vitamin levels, liver targets the highest-impact gaps rather than spreading a thin layer across everything. The honest answer: for most people, neither approach alone is perfect. Some women use liver capsules as their primary daily nutrient support and address any remaining gaps through diet. Others combine liver with a targeted supplement for what liver lacks, like vitamin D or magnesium.

Iodine belongs on the list of nutrients liver does not supply in meaningful amounts, alongside vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, calcium and magnesium.

### Which Chief product fits

The organic beef liver capsules for targeted nutrient density. The liver, heart and kidney complex broadens the organ profile across three organs rather than one. If your goal is replacing a general multivitamin, the standalone liver capsules are the closest whole food equivalent for iron, B12, folate and vitamin A.

The liver, heart and kidney complex adds CoQ10 from heart, additional selenium from kidney, and small amounts of vitamin D and vitamin C.

### How to use it

One serve daily with food. Review your remaining dietary gaps honestly. If you eat fruit, vegetables and get sunlight, you probably cover vitamin C, some vitamin D and most minerals through diet. If you live somewhere with low UV or eat a limited diet, consider targeted individual supplements for what liver does not provide rather than doubling up with a multivitamin that duplicates the nutrients liver already covers well.

## Not suited for

Not a complete replacement for a multivitamin if your diet is very restricted or you have gaps in vitamin C, D, E, calcium or magnesium. Liver covers some nutrients deeply but not broadly. Not suitable during pregnancy without medical advice due to vitamin A content. Not for anyone with iron overload conditions. Animal sourced and in a bovine gelatine capsule, so not suitable for vegans or vegetarians.
